Most people consider their insertion technique for ultrasound guided peripheral IV catheter as compliant with basic infection control measures.  However, when procedures are observed there is a great deal of contamination without inserter awareness. This presentation will demonstrate common contamination that inserters do not consider an issue.  Clean, sterile vs aseptic technique, clean vs. sterile gloves, non-sterile vs sterile gel or do we need gel at all? These are all debated, and no one seems to agree on the standard technique.   Using the principle of aseptic non touch technique, we will demonstrate various correct ways of proper insertion.

Objectives:

1. Discuss the principle of aseptic non touch technique
2. Identify commonly accepted, but unacceptable contamination events
3. Apply ANTT to ultrasound guided PIV catheter insertion
4. Learn how ultrasound probes and gel is a large source of contamination
5. Learn the various insertion techniques and technologies to prevent contamination
